Connecting with Community
The issue of childhood hunger is especially important or meaningful to us because youth volunteers reside in and attend a school situated in an area identified by the Federal government as poverty-stricken, known as the Promise Zone. This region is predominantly inhabited by SNAP participants living more than 0.5 miles from a grocery store, lacking vehicle access. They are more than twice as likely to rely on convenience stores, potentially leading to poor dietary choices and health issues. The Young Hero youth service project involves educating children in the classroom, providing meals, and encouraging children to contribute to the community. This is a youth-led initiative, and we want to show all youth and their families in the community we care for them and wants them to thrive in unity, peace and creativity. Get involved with direct service activities like organizing awareness campaigns, food drives, collect canned goods, creating awareness posters, and writing advocacy letters. LAN Inc in association with I Am Success JAX will host a service award ceremony to recognize all youth volunteers at the end of summer. Stay tuned for more details!
Below are a list of summer youth lunch programs and local summer volunteer opportunities.
Don't wait, get involved. So much good can be done, for everyone.

Engaging youth in community service and volunteering during the summer months is important for several reasons:
Civic Responsibility: Participating in community service instills a sense of civic responsibility and encourages young people to actively contribute to the well-being of their community.
Empathy and Compassion: Volunteering exposes youth to diverse populations and experiences, fostering empathy and compassion towards others, including those less fortunate.
Skill Development: Volunteering provides opportunities for youth to develop valuable skills such as leadership, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, which are beneficial for personal and professional growth.
Sense of Purpose: Involvement in meaningful activities like community service gives youth a sense of purpose and fulfillment, boosting their self-esteem and mental well-being.
Social Connection: Volunteering allows youth to connect with peers who share similar values and interests, promoting social interaction and a sense of belonging.
Building Relationships: Through volunteering, young people have the opportunity to build relationships with community members, organizations, and mentors, which can offer support and guidance in their personal and academic lives.
Positive Impact: By contributing their time and energy to various community projects, youth can make a positive impact on issues such as poverty, education, environment, and health, helping to create a better world for themselves and future generations.
Overall, engaging in community service and volunteering empowers youth to become active and responsible citizens while fostering personal growth, social connection, and a commitment to making a difference in the world around them
